« Back to Glossary Index

Located on the southwest tip of Grenada, and formerly known as Point Salines International Airport, Maurice Bishop International Airport is Grenada’s international airport.

Although the idea for an international airport was discussed since the British colonial period in 1954, it wasn’t until 1979, during the Grenada Revolution, that the NJM began the construction of the airport at  the southern peninsula of Point Salines with an extended runway to replace the much smaller Pearls Airport located in the northeastern parish of St. Andrews.

The US denounced the airport project as a military airfield serving as a staging area and refueling station for Cuban missiles.
