In 1979, the New Jewel Movement (NJM) overthrew Eric Gairy, prime minister of the small Caribbean island of Grenada.
The book We Move Tonight: The Making of the Grenada Revolution’ by Joseph Ewart Layne, a passionate NJM member and one of the Grenada 17, provides a firsthand narrative of the NJM’s clandestine meetings and some of the lessons learned, beginning in the 1970s up to the removal of Gairy’s regime on March 13, 1979.
Layne, who later became the Operational Commander of the People’s Revolutionary Army (PRA), was imprisoned in 1983 and convicted in 1986 for his role in the bloody and tragic events that took place in Grenada on Bloody Wednesday, October 19, 1983 . He was released in 2009.
