WIBS

« Back to Glossary Index

Launched in 1954, WIBS [Windward Islands Broadcasting Service] was a regional broadcasting network with headquarters in Grenada. The station and its running costs for the first few years were provided by British Colonial Development and Welfare Funds (CDW).

The Windward islands of Dominica, Grenada, St. Vincent and St. Lucia shared airtime throughout the day allowing much closer communication and exchange of news information.  In the late 1960s, then-Premier Eric Gairy decided that he wanted his own national radio station – Radio Grenada – and WIBS came to end with each island going its own way.
