Ackee is a fruit that looks like a pink mango or guava and is available throughout the Caribbean. Cultivated abundantly in Jamaica ackee is the integral ingredient of the country's national dish, ackee and saltfish.
Ackee grows on an evergreen tree and when ripe the fruit splits into three parts to expose yellow flesh with black seeds.
Unripe ackee is poisonous if eaten; as a result, fresh ackee is not permitted for import to the United States and can only be found in cans in US grocery stores.
Ackee was brought to the Caribbean from West Africa during the slave trade at the end of the 18th century.
