{"id":546,"date":"2016-10-14T15:08:44","date_gmt":"2016-10-14T19:08:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thecaribbeanist.com\/?post_type=glossary&#038;p=546"},"modified":"2019-03-10T15:47:10","modified_gmt":"2019-03-10T19:47:10","slug":"radio-grenada","status":"publish","type":"glossary","link":"https:\/\/grenadarevo.com\/glossary\/radio-grenada\/","title":{"rendered":"Radio Grenada<span class=\"dashicons \" data-icon=\"\" style=\"color:#000;display:inline;vertical-align:baseline;\"><\/span>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Radio Grenada\u00a0was the government-operated radio station in Grenada.<\/p>\n<p>In 1954, the station &#8211; known then as WIBS [Windward Islands Broadcasting Service] &#8211; was originally based in Tanteen.\u00a0 It moved to to its current location in Morne Rouge in 1957.\u00a0 The then Premier Eric Gairy began independent broadcasting as <em>Radio Grenada<\/em> in January 1972.<\/p>\n<p>Following the 1979-overthrow of Gairy&#8217;s regime, the NJM\u00a0established <em>Radio Free Grenada<\/em>, the name replacing R<em>adio Grenada<\/em>. The radio was the primary mode of communication used by the NJM to keep the country updated. The station building served as party headquarters for the first few days of the Grenada Revolution and as a holding cell for a handful of Gairy&#8217;s allies, senior police officers and soldiers.<\/p>\n<p>The Morne Rouge building was destroyed during the US Intervention in 1983.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The government-operated radio station
