Trinidad.\u00a0 Als was the founder of the Banking, Insurance and General Workers Union (BIGWU) .\u00a0 He also served as chair of the People&#8217;s Popular Movement.<\/p>\n<p>Als was a close friend of Cheddi Jagan, Trevor Munroe and Bernard Coard.<\/p>\n<p>During the final days of the Grenada Revolution, Michael Als was one of a handful of non-Grenadians allowed to mediate between the NJM factions.\u00a0 Als met with Maurice Bishop on October 18, 1983, the day before Bishop was killed.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Als died in December
